What is a Tummy Tuck?
Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a Tummy Tuck, is a type of Cosmetic Surgery that involves operating on the stomach area to make it thinner and more firm.
The procedure flattens the abdomen by surgically removing excess fat and skin. In cases where muscles have weakened, the procedure may also include the tightening of the abdominal wall.
A Tummy Tuck is generally performed as an inpatient procedure, either under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation. The incisions are typically at, or just above, the pubic area.
When will I see the results of my Tummy Tuck?
Initial results will begin to appear within 2 – 4 weeks of the procedure, with final results appearing after approximately 8 weeks.
Flattening and fading of scars continue for one year.
How soon after pregnancy can you get a tummy tuck?
Generally, surgeons advise waiting six months to a year after giving birth before having a belly tuck. This time frame allows your body to totally recover and return to its original weight.
Should I get a Tummy Tuck??
Tummy Tucks are usually performed after pregnancy or extreme weight loss, when the muscles have weakened and excess fat and/or skin is visible.
The procedure may be performed in conjunction with Liposuction, where excess fat is removed from adjacent areas.
Liposuction alone can be considered as an alternative where excess skin and weakened muscles are not factors.

How long does a Tummy Tuck procedure take?
This depends on the size of the tummy. Typically a Tummy Tuck takes 1-2 hours. Larger tummies can take 3-4 hours depending upon the amount of skin to be removed, contouring of the hips, and the thighs.
Do I need to lose weight before a tummy tuck?
Yes, if you are too overweight for a stomach tuck, your surgeon will advise you to get into your target weight range and stay there for a period of time.
